Dit jaar vond de eerste Race of the Classics na twee jaar afwezigheid plaats. Deze studentenzeilrace vindt al sinds 1989 plaats. De Race, of Rees, zoals deze onder de deelnemers wordt genoemd, gaat traditioneel van start in Rotterdam, om een week later te eindigen in Amsterdam. Onderweg worden diverse havens aangedaan en races gehouden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De zeilrace wil ook graag bewustzijn cre\u00ebren rond een duurzaamheidsthema door een verbinding te leggen met een duurzaam initiatief. Dit jaar was dat Fishing for Litter. Fishing for Litter is een samenwerking van ongeveer 130 vissers, havenbedrijven, scheepsafvalbedrijven en KIMO Nederland en Belgi\u00eb. Het doel is dat de zee schoner wordt. Vissers bewaren het afval, wat ze als bijvangst in hun netten krijgen, aan boord in aan hen verstrekte big bags. Dit doen zij geheel op vrijwillige basis. Na terugkomst in de haven zetten zij deze big bags aan de kade, waar zij verder worden verwerkt door de scheepsafvalbedrijven. Zo helpen zij mee de zee te ontdoen van zwerfafval. Fishing for Litter bestaat inmiddels al meer dan 20 jaar en heeft in die tijd al bijna 5.000 ton afval uit zee gehaald, dankzij de inzet van de vissers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Om de deelnemende studenten bewust te maken van hoeveel afval er in het (mariene) milieu terecht kan komen, is de Race of the Classics-organisatie dit jaar een samenwerking met Fishing for Litter Fishing aangegaan. Per schip is er een Fishing for Litter-big bag uitgedeeld. Hierin is op elk schip het plastic afval van de week durende race bewaard. Zo werd er bewustzijn gecre\u00eberd over de hoeveelheid afval die geproduceerd wordt en de rol die jij kunt spelen om het (marien) zwerfafval te verminderen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aan het einde van de week werden de big bags in ceremonieel in ontvangst genomen door KIMO. Het maakte trots dat er goed meegedaan werd. In gesprek met enkele deelnemers komt consequent naar voren dat ook zij het belangrijk vinden dat de het milieu schoon blijft, en dat daarvoor een eigen verantwoordelijkheid nodig is.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
